Summary

Orochimaru is one of the Legendary Sannin and one of the most brilliant and terrifying minds the shinobi world has ever known. A genius trained by the Third Hokage alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, Orochimaru became obsessed with immortality after the death of his parents, which he witnessed as a child. This obsession drove him to conduct horrific experiments on fellow villagers — including kidnapping sixty children in an attempt to replicate Hashirama's Wood Release — which led to his discovery, defection, and lifelong status as one of Konoha's greatest enemies.

As the founder of the Hidden Sound Village, Orochimaru orchestrated the Konoha Crush, assassinated the Fourth Kazekage, and implanted his consciousness into countless hosts through his body-transfer technique. His manipulation of Sasuke Uchiha during the timeskip made him the central antagonist of Part I. Though he was sealed by Itachi's Susanoo and later revived through Kabuto's machinations, Orochimaru underwent a fundamental shift during the Fourth War. Witnessing Kabuto's failure and reflecting on his legacy, he chose to fight alongside the Allied Forces and later accepted a conditional pardon, living under Yamato's surveillance.

In Boruto, Orochimaru has become an unexpected ally — a gender-fluid, morally ambiguous figure whose scientific genius now serves Konoha. He created Mitsuki, a synthetic son who inherited Sage Mode and questions of identity, and operates a research facility that investigates the Otsutsuki threat. Orochimaru's arc from monster to morally complex immortal scientist is one of the series' most fascinating transformations.
