Summary

Itachi Uchiha is one of the most complex and tragic figures in the Naruto universe. A genius of the Uchiha clan, Itachi graduated the Academy at age 7, awakened his Sharingan at 8, became Chunin at 10, and joined the ANBU Black Ops at 11, eventually becoming an ANBU captain at 13. His intellect and combat prowess were matched only by his profound sense of responsibility and pacifism — traits that put him at odds with the Uchiha clan's growing unrest and plans for a coup against Konoha.

Faced with an impossible choice between loyalty to his clan and preventing a civil war that would kill countless innocents, Itachi accepted a secret mission from Konoha's elders, led by Danzo Shimura, to eliminate the Uchiha clan. He carried out the massacre, sparing only his younger brother Sasuke, whom he loved above all else. Itachi then joined the Akatsuki as a double agent, monitoring the organization from within while protecting Konoha. He allowed himself to be cast as a villain, living with unbearable guilt so that Sasuke could become a hero by avenging the clan.

Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan granted him Tsukuyomi (an inescapable illusion), Amaterasu (black flames that burn anything), and Susanoo (a colossal spectral warrior wielding the Yata Mirror and the Totsuka Blade). During his final battle with Sasuke, Itachi finally succumbed to the terminal illness he had been hiding while taking the opportunity to remove Orochimaru's cursed seal from Sasuke and implant his own eyes. Itachi was later reanimated by Kabuto during the Fourth War, but used his Izanami technique to trap Kabuto in an infinite loop, freeing the Impure World Reincarnation army. His final farewell to Sasuke — "I will love you always" — stands as one of the most emotional moments in the series.
