Summary

Neji Hyuga was a prodigy of the Hyuga clan's Branch Family, widely considered the most talented Hyuga of his generation. Born into the Branch Family, Neji was branded with the Caged Bird Seal as a child — a mark of servitude to the Main Branch that could inflict pain or death at the Main Family's command. This injustice, combined with his father Hizashi's sacrifice as a substitute for his twin brother Hiashi during a political crisis, left Neji bitterly resentful toward the Main Family and convinced that destiny was predetermined and inescapable.

Neji's worldview shattered during the Chunin Exams when he faced Naruto Uzumaki, a boy branded a failure who refused to accept his supposed fate. Naruto's victory over Neji taught him that destiny is not fixed — a lesson that fundamentally changed him. He reconciled with Hinata and Hiashi, learning the truth about his father's willing sacrifice made out of love rather than coercion.

Under Might Guy's tutelage alongside Rock Lee and Tenten, Neji honed his Gentle Fist techniques to Jonin level — the first of the Konoha 11 to achieve that rank. His mastery of the Eight Trigrams techniques, including the Palm Rotation absolute defense, made him one of the Leaf's most formidable close-combat shinobi. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Neji fought alongside Hinata and Naruto against the Ten-Tails. In a defining act of self-sacrifice, Neji used his body to shield Hinata and Naruto from deadly wooden projectiles, dying in Naruto's arms. His final words affirmed that Naruto was the one who had freed him from the cage of destiny, and his death — choosing his own fate as his father had — became one of the war's most emotional moments. Neji's portrait hangs in the Hyuga compound and his memory lives on through his cousin Hinata, who named her son Boruto in part as a tribute to Neji.
