Summary
Sai was introduced in Naruto Shippuden as Sasuke Uchiha's replacement on Team 7. As an infant, he was taken into the Root ANBU division by Danzo Shimura, where all personal identity was systematically erased. Recruits had no names, no emotions, and no past. Sai was given his codename and raised alongside an adoptive older brother figure named Shin, who taught him fragments of emotion through drawings.
Root's brutal conditioning suppressed all emotions, turning Sai into an efficient but hollow operative. His only emotional outlet was his art — ink-based drawings that preserved fragments of his suppressed humanity. As part of his conditioning, he was forced to fight Shin to the death, leaving him with an incomplete picture book representing their severed bond.
Sai was assigned to infiltrate Team 7 on Danzo's orders to monitor and potentially assassinate Sasuke Uchiha. His emotionless demeanor and complete lack of social awareness created immediate friction with Naruto and Sakura. However, through his interactions with Team 7 — particularly Naruto's unwavering belief in bonds — Sai began rediscovering emotions that Root had forcibly stripped away.
Sai's primary combat ability is the Super Beast Imitating Drawing technique (Choju Giga), which brings his ink drawings to life. He can create giant birds for flight, lions for attack, snakes for restraint, and thousands of tiny ink mice for tracking. His skillset makes him an excellent reconnaissance and support shinobi.
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Sai confronted his reanimated brother Shin, who had been brought back by Kabuto's Impure World Reincarnation. Through this emotional reunion, Sai completed the final pages of their picture book and found closure for his childhood trauma. He played a significant role in battling the White Zetsu Army and assisting in sealing reanimated shinobi.
After the war, Sai developed a romantic relationship with Ino Yamanaka, marrying her and having a son, Inojin. He became a devoted father, determined to give his child the emotional upbringing he was denied. In the Boruto era, Sai serves as head of the Konoha ANBU and works in the village's intelligence division, supporting Naruto's Hokage administration.
