Summary
Yamato, born as Tenzo, is a shinobi who possesses the rare Wood Release kekkei genkai. As an infant, he was among sixty children kidnapped by Orochimaru for experiments attempting to replicate Hashirama Senju's Wood Release. All sixty children died — except Tenzo, who survived and awakened the ability.
Discovered by Danzo Shimura, Tenzo was raised within Root under the codename Kinoe. His first major assignment was to assassinate Kakashi Hatake, but Kakashi's compassion planted seeds of doubt about Root. The Third Hokage eventually removed Tenzo from Root and assigned him to regular ANBU under Kakashi's informal mentorship.
When Kakashi was incapacitated, Tsunade appointed Yamato as temporary leader of Team 7. His primary mission was helping Naruto develop the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken by using Wood Release to suppress the Nine-Tails' chakra. His calm demeanor and abilities made him an effective, if often exasperated, leader.
Yamato's Wood Release is exceptionally versatile — he can create wooden structures, barriers, and offensive techniques like the Wood Dragon (which absorbs chakra) and the massive Wood Golem. His ability to suppress Tailed Beast chakra makes him uniquely valuable to Konoha.
During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Yamato was captured by Kabuto and used as a living battery to power the White Zetsu Army, trapped within the spiral Zetsu entity until freed by Allied Forces. Following the war, he was tasked with monitoring Orochimaru — a duty he carries out with persistent vigilance given his traumatic history.
In the Boruto era, Yamato continues monitoring Orochimaru and investigating Otsutsuki-related incidents using his Wood Release expertise.
